Course Structure

Any study you do should be meaningful and make sense once you enter the workforce in your chosen career path.

Learning the theory alone can make it difficult for some students to learn. It's like getting into a new car without your licence having only studied the road rules. It's going to be scary and you will feel uncertain.

By having a practical component as part of your study there are a number of benefits.

  • It can help you learn the theory because you are putting it in a real life situation.
  • You get to road test what you're learning.
  • Practicing in a setting with highly trained and skilled professionals will mean you'll learn more and have more confidence once you start driving your career!

So don't think of those practical hours as unpaid work experience. Think about how it's giving you contacts in an industry you're new to. You have the potential to impress and be offered paid employment with that employer when you finish!

Practical component

Total hours for the course are approximately 1200 hours with the full qualification being completed within two years. The practical component of this course is 240 hours on the job work experience.

On the job work experience is 240 hours consisting of:

  • 60 hours - birth to two years
  • 60 hours - two to three years
  • 60 hours - three to five years
  • 30 hours - must include a child with additional needs (any age group)
  • 30 hours - service management | administration duties
  • On the job work experience hours must be completed before Diploma is issued

Theory and Assessments:

  • All units are self-paced
  • There are no exams
  • Assessments are not graded-they are competency based
  • There is no limit to how many times you can submit an assessment item
  • You will receive feedback and support during each unit to help you achieve competency

Your assessments will be measured through the following methods:

  • Online assessments
  • Practical tasks
  • Observation of performance
  • Projects/portfolios
  • Workplace | third party reports

Course Duration

Approximately 1200-2400 hours

Students studying full-time should allow approximately 16 - 25 hours per

Not currently working in the childcare industry?

  • You will need to complete an unpaid work experience placement to gain hands on experience
  • Find a childcare centre that will supervise you during your work experience

We will assist you with:

  • How to approach a centre to ask for a work experience placement
  • Coaching on how to present yourself
  • Interview and resume tips
  • Preparing you for your placement - what do you need before you start?
  • Consultation with your chosen centre

What you will need before you start your placement:

  • Working with Children check relevant to your state
  • A current First Aid Certificate including Asthma and Anaphylaxis – you will have completed this as part of your study
  • It is recommended that all your immunisations are up to date

We provide:

  • Full induction before your work placement
  • Advice on what to expect
  • Tips for a successful placement
  • Guidance and support along the way

Currently working in childcare? We will:

  • Assist you and your Centre to use your current paid work towards your work experience component
  • You may still need to attend another centre if you don’t have children attending within all age ranges

There are 28 units in the Certificate III Early Childhood Education and Care. You can choose five(5) units from the list of electives and the 23 core units are mandatory to complete this qualification.

How does 24/7 online study work?

The greatest thing about online study is you can study anywhere, anytime around your work and lifestyle commitments. You are in complete control and don’t have to worry about working to a restrictive timetable or dreaded deadlines for assignments. Maybe you've just finished a nightshift and have a one hour train commute. Jump on your laptop or Ipad and get some study done. You've taken your kids to a play centre and it's noisy and you're bored. Pop in some headphones, grab out your phone and you're good to go. You take charge of your own study!

Being in control of your own study does require motivation and loads of self-discipline. We know that can often be a struggle particularly if you are studying alone. With EPEC you will be part of a community of learners who are studying the same course as you. We strongly encourage you to access our study groups on Facebook and interact with other students. Remember no question is a silly question!

How long until my work gets assessed?

EPEC Education aims to provide assessment marking results as soon as possible, within a maximum of six (6) weeks from the student submitting their assessment. In the event that marking time-frames are extending beyond six (6) weeks (eg due to times of peak demand, holiday periods, unforeseeable circumstances having arisen), any students affected will be advised by email with an estimated timeframe.

Where can I find the Student Handbook?

You can find the student handbook at the bottom of our Website under Terms and Conditions or you can access it directly here - Student Handbook.

Who finds my Practical Placement?

Students are responsible for initiating contact with the vocational placement provider. EPEC Education's Student Support Officer will then contact the Centre to ensure the suitability of the placement and organise the Vocational Placement Agreement.

Tips on how to find your Practical Placement

When looking for a suitable work placement consider the following:

  • Are you already working or volunteering in the childcare industry? You could potentially do your work placement at your current place of work
  • If you're entering the industry for the first time, do some research about centres in your area you could approach
  • EPEC Education has additional resources available to help with approaching and finding a suitable work placement. You will find these resources on your student portal under additional resources

How do I apply for Recognition of Prior Learning?

If you would like to apply for Recognition of Prior Learning, simply tick the RPL box on your Enrolment Form. After enrolment, an RPL Assessor will contact you to discuss your evidence collection. Please also read the information on Recognition of Prior Learning in the Student Handbook.

You've completed part of your qualification elsewhere. No problem! EPEC Education also offers cross credits. We'll apply what you've already completed so you don't have to start again!

Can I apply for a refund on my course fees?

All courses include an initial non-refundable administration fee of 25% of the total course fee. Beyond this, you may request a refund by following the terms and conditions of the Refund Policy found in the Student Handbook.

Please send an email to office@epeceducation.com.au or call 1800 373 233 to request a refund form.

I’m not happy, where can I make a complaint?

We work hard to ensure our students are happy and provided with all the resources, help and guidance needed. If you have a query about anything in relation to your study please give us a call! Studying is hard enough without the added stress of things that aren't working for you. We don't want you to lose sleep over it. Sometimes a problem shared is a problem halved and it can be a simple fix to get you back on your way!

If you still aren't happy we support your rights to lodge a complaint if you feel you have been treated unfairly. All complaints should be submitted in writing at the earliest possible opportunity and sent by email to office@epeceducation.com.au. For our full complaints policy please see the Student Handbook.

I didn't pass an assessment and I want it reassessed

We understand sometimes you think you've smashed an assessment but when you get your marks back they fall short. This is always disappointing and we want you to know it doesn't mean you won't get there in the end! We will always provide you with feedback so you know where you can improve. And most of all if you're not happy you can give the Trainer who marked your assessment a call. You get as many chances as you need to become competent, but we strongly recommend following the comprehensive feedback to improve!

If you are still not happy with the decision we understand. EPEC Education will always provide you with a fair process to lodge an appeal when you've exhausted all other options. For a step-by-step guide on the appeals process please see the Student Handbook.
