Short Courses

 

COURSE OVERVIEW

EPEC Education's short courses are great for those entering the childcare industry or wanting to add to their professional development portfolio. These courses bring learning to life through video and practical scenarios so you can apply your knowledge in the real world! 

All courses are self-paced online and take approximately 30 minutes to two hours to complete. There are no limits to how many times you can attempt to answer the short questions throughout. The content remains available to you after you have completed the course should you wish to refer back to it at any time.

You will receive a certificate of completion once you have succesfuly answered all of the assessment questions.

Managing Behaviour

This short course combines practical short videos and questions to develop the skills and knowledge in the following areas:

  • Recognise age-appropriate and different types of children’s behaviour
  • Establish, guide and redirect behaviour
  • Provide positive reinforcement

This course consists of one online self-paced module which will take approximately 30-40 minutes to complete. There are no limits to how many times you can attempt the questions. The content remains available to you after you have completed the course should you wish to refer back to it at any time. You will receive a certificate of completion once you have succesfully answered all of the assessment questions.

Caring for Babies and Toddlers

This short course consists of four individual modules. Each module combines practical short videos and questions to develop the skills and knowledge in the following areas: 

Caring for babies

  • Communicate with families to understand the individual needs of the baby
  • Positively engage and interact with babies and toddlers
  • Ensure a safe sleeping environment for babies

Nappy changing

  • Follow the nappy-changing policy at your service
  • Know when to change nappies
  • Consider the individual needs of the child during the nappy-changing process
  • Prepare the nappy-changing area in line with safety and hygiene requirements
  • Understand infection control
  • Deal with any occurences of nappy rash

Safe sleeping

  • Understand the sleep and rest needs of babies and toddlers
  • Involve babies and toddlers in rest activities
  • Know how to create safe and healthy rest environments
  • Understand Suddent Infant Death Syndrome and the steps that will reduce the risk of it occuring

Culturally sensitive practice

  • Reflect on your own cultural identity and biases within an education and care setting
  • Identify and develop cultural competency
  • Support individual cultural identitites
  • Demonstrate cultural sensitivity
  • Implement inclusive learning experiences

These four online self-paced module will take approximately two hours to complete. There are no limits to how many times you can attempt the questions. You will receive a certificate of completion once you have succesfuly answered all of the assessment questions.

Inclusive Teaching Practices

This short course consists of two individual modules. Each module combines practical short videos and questions to develop the skills and knowledge in the following areas:

Intentional Teaching 

  • Understanding the purpose of intentional teaching
  • Explain why intentional teaching is effective
  • Recognise intentional teaching in action
  • Develop intentional teaching skills

Culturally sensitive practices

  • Reflect on your own cultural identity and biases within an education and care setting
  • Identify and develop cultural competency
  • Support individual cultural identitites
  • Demonstrate cultural sensitivity
  • Implement inclusive learning experiences

These two online self-paced module will take approximately one hour to complete. There are no limits to how many times you can attempt the questions. Environmentally Friendly Play Spaces

This short course consists of two individual modules. Each module combines practical short videos and questions to develop the skills and knowledge in the following areas:
 

Environmentally friendly play spaces

  • Understand what is meant by environmentally friendly
  • Create indoor and outdoor play spaces
  • Using natural and recycled materials for play
  • Understand safety considerations in using recycled materials

Learning through play

  • Understand the value of play
  • Understand the stages of play
  • Support children's play and learning
  • Facilitate children's play and learning

These two online self-paced module will take approximately one hour to complete. There are no limits to how many times you can attempt the questions. Food Safety in Childcare

This short course consists of three individual modules. Each module combines practical short videos and questions to develop the skills and knowledge in the following areas:

Positive mealtime environments

  • Follow the mealtime procedure at your service
  • Consider the individual needs of the children when establishing a mealtime routine
  • Prepare an environment for mealtime
  • Participate in a mealtime for a group of children

Kitchen safety

  • Causes of injury in the kitchen
  • Types of injuries sustained in the kitchen
  • Injury prevention
 

Slips, trips and falls

  • What are slips, trips and falls
  • Types of injuries sustained by slips, trips and falls
  • Common causes of slips, trips and falls

Communicating with Families

This short course consists of two individual modules. Each module combines practical short videos and questions to develop the skills and knowledge in the following areas:

Communicating with families

  • Understand the way your service gathers information from and communicates with parents
  • Gather information from the parents relating to the child’s needs
  • Establish positive relationships with parents to enable two-way communication
  • Manage expectations of parents through good communication and proactive discussion of issues

  • Reflect on your own cultural identity and biases within an education and care setting
  • Identify and develop cultural competency
  • Support individual cultural identitites
  • Demonstrate cultural sensitivity
  • Implement inclusive learning experiences
