Everyone has a different approach to study and here at EPEC Education we encourage our students to find the system that works best for them.

Being in the study game for so long we know a lot of tricks, and we know that for many of you, studying at home results in procrastination, laying around in your Jarmies and watching lots of reality TV!! We also know that being flexible pays huge dividends in the study arena. So how can you be flexible? To start with, you can mix up your study locations to get the juices flowing. Here are 5 great tips to get you powered up.

           1) Incorporate your study into your exercise routine.

When you’re sweating it out at the gym, pop your headphones in and tune into a study Webinar. When you’re pounding the treadmill in your garage, log in to your Online study materials.

           2) Visit your local Library.

One benefit to studying at the library is that you have immediate access to computers, WIFI, journals, books, as well as food and coffee to keep the munchies at bay. Even better, there are other people studying in the library too, and this gives you a feeling of support and comradery.

           3) Tap into the WIFI at your local coffee shop.

For some students, the chatter of people and clanging of cups instils a sense of calm. Taking your laptop to a coffee shop and tackling a few assessment questions can make good sense. While this isn’t for everyone, don’t be fooled into thinking that you need perfect peace to study – this is a myth, and many people actually get more achieved amongst the familiarity of noise and activity.

           4) Relax with your books at the Park.

There is something special about nature that makes us realise we are just a small part of a larger Universe. This helps us keep things in perspective, and for some, reduces study fear and anxiety. Don’t underestimate the healing powers of getting down in the dirt!

           5) Catch up on study on your commute to work.

For those of you who have heavy home life commitments, the train or bus ride to work may be your only break in the traffic. If this sounds like you, crack the whip first up, and tackle some of your study problems on your early morning commute.

We each have our own unique way of effectively studying, but if you are having trouble getting motivated it is essential you give various methods a shot. Sometimes a simple change of pace and venue can give you the push you need to stay on track.

5 strategies for teachers and caregivers to help children through divorce

There are now over one million children in Australia going through a family breakdown. This almost always causes stress for children, with over 25% of children experiencing long term trauma as a result. Reduced access to once familiar extended family, the introduction of stepparents and step siblings, and the reduced presence of once consistent parents, can all contribute to children feeling fearful and uncertain. This week, Dr Mary Anne Hall from EPEC Education, provides five ways teachers and carers can assist children in transition while they are at school and at day care.

           1) Understand the challenge children are experiencing.

Children are very good at picking up adult cues, so they sense what is going on between Mum and Dad, especially if there is conflict in the home. This may result in the child ‘acting out’ in the care setting. Utilise normal behavioural strategies, but always approach with compassion and empathy.

           2) Reduce technology in favour of connection.

The increase in technology means that children now have reduced mental ‘space’ to understand and process their own emotions. To combat this, make your programs innovative and creative. Acknowledge different family structures in your group time and make your room one of belonging. Sensory toys, journaling for older children, and the use of emotion walls, can all help children feel more settled in times of uncertainty.

           3) Avoid too much structure, instead use ‘gentle’ routines.

When children are experiencing upheaval in the home, it’s essential their school or day care is a safe place, with consistent routines and emotionally available educators. Take care however, not to ‘over structure’. Be flexible to promote connection. If siblings are unsettled, allow them time together in the same room to provide comfort and support to each other.

           4) Use emotional validation strategies to process feelings.

When a child approaches you or you notice they are struggling, get down to their level, give them a little hug and say, “I can see that you’re really sad today, tell me about it”. Allow the child to express how they’re feeling, and to brainstorm their own strategy for self-soothing. Say, “What would make you feel better”? If necessary, offer some suggestions. Maybe a call home to Mum or Dad, holding a favourite toy, or spending time with a favourite friend, may help reduce their discomfort.

           5) Remain neutral and impartial.

It is essential to remain a ‘sanctuary’ for the child in times of transition. Acknowledge the parents and recognise that they’re distressed but do this without becoming involved. Say, “I’m really sorry to hear you are going through all of this” – but don’t put your own judgements on the end. Do not take sides!

It is important for teachers and caregivers to tap into their own empathy and really connect with the child. Suggestions such as encouraging the child to play with a favourite toy, or calling Mum or Dad, should be done in combination with acknowledgement and validation of the child’s feelings. Children in transition need to know their teacher/carer is their safe person, the person they can connect with and rely on. Now more than ever, they need this reassurance and validation.

5 steps to ensuring adequate supervision

Supervising children adequately is the most important skill an early childhood educator can have. While having the ability to provide children with a safe and secure environment may seem like an easy task, there are over 1000 cases annually, whereby Australian children are seriously hurt in the early childhood setting. These accidents range from fingers being jammed in doors; dislocation and broken bones; choking; scalds and burns; to children having adverse allergic reactions. These accidents can and do, have dire consequences.

Yes, aspects of your previous study can be used as evidence for your RPL, but you must be able to provide evidence that demonstrates your use of these skills and knowledge within the workplace.

Is Credit Transfer the same as RPL?

No. Credit transfer provides a credit for unit/s that you have previously completed, either through a previous qualification or study. You must be able to provide a statement of attainment for the unit of study you wish to Credit Transfer, and EPEC Education must be able to check the validity of this by either contacting the training organisation you previously studied with, or checking your USI transcript.

At any stage if the assessor or yourself identify that you do not have the required knowledge and skills to complete RPL for a unit/s, you will have the option to pay the difference between the RPL and the unit/s to complete full training to reach competency.

Once again, this depends on the individual, and their knowledge and skills in the areas of the unit. You will still need to answer questions, provide evidence of your knowledge, and demonstrate your skills in your workplace.

Significant evidence is required, to be able to demonstrate the skills and knowledge required for RPL.

It is not always quicker than completing study of a full unit, as if you do not have the required skills and knowledge, or if evidence is not readily available for aspects of the unit you have applied for, you will need to spend the time either collecting evidence, or completing additional gap training.

You must be employed in a relevant industry, to be able to demonstrate the skills required for the unit/s you want to RPL.

If the unit/s you are applying for RPL are Diploma level, you will need to hold a position where you a responsible for planning and implementing procedures and programs. You may also be required to have a supervisor within your workplace available to sign you off on observations.

What can I RPL?

When considering which units, you would like to apply for RPL, think about:

The Qualification outline which can be found at

              HERE

. Make a list of the units you believe you may be able to RPL.

             Go to

              www.training.gov.au

, and search each unit. Consider the list of knowledge and skills required for each unit.

If you believe you have all the knowledge and skills outlined for the unit, this is a good choice for RPL.

If you believe you only have some of the knowledge and skills outlined, you should complete the full unit of competency, as training would be required to deem you competent.

Dr Mary Anne Hall from EPEC Education provides 6 tips below for talking to your kids about the Coronavirus.

How parents and caregivers communicate with children in relation to stressful situations will have a direct impact not on just how children feel, but how they build resilience going forward.

Dr Mary Anne Hall from EPEC Education provides 6 tips below for talking to your kids about the Coronavirus.

            1.	Don’t be afraid to discuss the Coronavirus.

Children will be hearing information from both friends and the Internet. You may be their only source of reliable information on this topic.

            2.	For pre school age and under, it is important to keep your tone light and calm.

For children who are no longer attending child care, you need to explain it in a way they will understand. “You need to stay home with Mum and Dad right now as there are extra germs around”; “Being home with Mum and Dad is the safest place for you now, but soon all the silly germs will be gone and you’ll be able to go back to School/Kindy/Daycare, and see your friends again”.

            3.	For lower grade primary school children, keep information brief and simple.

“Remember the last time you had a cold? This is kind of like that”; “Remember, doctors and nurses are all working hard to keep us safe”.

            4.	Higher grade primary school children will require more accurate information.

Highlight to them what measures their school and family unit are taking to keep them safe. It is important to always be available to your child, even if you do not have all the answers. “While I might not have the right answers to your questions right now, I will tell you when I do”.

            5.	For high school children, refer them to credible sources of information.

Let them know that what they read on the Internet is not always accurate. Provide reassurance while providing clear and honest information. “I am always here to talk if you need me”; “Scientist are busy working on a vaccine”.

            6.	Keep the lines of communication open.

Focus on what your family is doing to stay safe.

Children will feel more in control and reassured if they are taking actions to keep themselves healthy. Incorporate self care routines such as hand washing and general cleaning into family routines and make sure the children are involved in this.

I didn't pass an assessment and I want it reassessed

We understand sometimes you think you've smashed an assessment but when you get your marks back they fall short. This is always disappointing and we want you to know it doesn't mean you won't get there in the end! We will always provide you with feedback so you know where you can improve. And most of all if you're not happy you can give the Trainer who marked your assessment a call. You get as many opportunities as you need to become competent, but we strongly recommend following the comprehensive feedback to improve!

If you are still not happy with the decision we will submit your assessment to another Trainer to be assessed. EPEC Education will always provide you with a fair process to lodge an appeal when you've exhausted all other options. For a step-by-step guide on the appeals process please see the Student Handbook.

Studying is hard enough without having to download PDF's and submit them manually via email. Some training organisations call this online learning.

We have a full E Learning system allowing you to save your work along the way. You will be able to see in real time exactly where you are up to. Your trainer can also see exactly where you are up to. No more submitting assessments and wondering if your trainer has even looked at them.

EPEC Education aims to provide assessment marking results as soon as possible, within a maximum of two (2) weeks from the student submitting their assessment. In the event that marking time-frames are extending beyond two (2) weeks (eg due to times of peak demand, holiday periods), any students affected will be advised by email with an estimated timeframe.

Our promise to you is that if, for whatever reason, we are unable to complete the agreed training for a student, EPEC Education will make the necessary arrangements for the training to be delivered by another Registered Training Organisation.

How does 24/7 online study work?

The greatest thing about online study is you can study anywhere, anytime around your work and lifestyle commitments. You are in complete control and don’t have to worry about working to a restrictive time table or dreaded deadlines for assignments. Maybe you've just finished a nightshift and have a one hour train commute. Jump on your laptop or Ipad and get some study done. You've taken your kids to a play centre and it's noisy and you're bored. Pop in some headphones, grab out your phone and you're good to go. You take charge of your own study!

Being in control of your own study does require motivation and loads of self-discipline. We know that can often be a struggle particularly if you are studying alone. With EPEC you will be part of a community of learners who are studying the same course as you. We strongly encourage you to access our study groups on Facebook and interact with other students. Remember no question is a silly question!

5 things you DON'T NEED to be a successful student

Embarking on a study journey can seem like an insurmountable task. Long hours of study, reduced time doing pleasurable activities, and less opportunities for hanging out with your peeps. Your mind may become muddled with unanswered questions which slowly chip away at your inner drive and self-esteem. Am I smart enough? Will my friends still like me if I am more qualified than them? Will I have enough time to still exercise, go to work, spend time with my intimate other?

While these questions are worth asking, they have absolutely no bearing on your ability to finish your studies. In fact, all you need to propser is a good dose of motivation, some true grit, with a big dose of self-belief thrown in for good measure. This week, EPEC Education Director Dr Mary Anne Hall debunks some myths about learning and shows you that all you need is sheer self-will and determination to get you across the finish line. She highlights the following five factors as irrelevant to your success and stresses the importance of not getting hung up on the details.

           1. A lot of spare time to study

We have all been led to believe that study requires enormous amounts of time. News flash: It doesn’t! In fact, by accessing help from your trainers and tutors; joining study groups; making some connections with other students; and getting up close and personal with Google, you can have your assignments knocked over in no time at all.

           2. Access to all the latest technology

Today’s advertising agencies would have us all believe that we need all the latest gizmos to even be a worthwhile member of society. Absolute nonsense! All you need to get back in the saddle is a reliable Internet connection and some paper and a good old lead pencil to take some notes! If you have limited coin to purchase Internet access, pop into your local Library or other government funded agency for a hand up.

           3. A good track record at School

Just because you failed dismally at School, this in no way indicates your future success. That was then, this is now. With maturity, the adult ability to ask for help and problem solve, and the dozens of training colleges relying on your success for their financial survival, you are already on your way to your graduation ceremony.

           4. Support from family and friends

While it’s nice to receive high fives from your family and your sweetheart, this is in no way necessary to be a top-notch scholar. In fact, many experts note that family and significant others can sometimes impede a student’s progress through fear of competing life goals and jealousy about your impending success. You have everything you need inside of yourself. If your inner circle are on board with that, great, if not, just keep sticking to your path.

5 easy ways for teachers to help children through divorce

           1. Understand the challenge children are experiencing

. Children are very good at picking up adult cues, so they sense what is going on between Mum and Dad, especially if there is conflict in the home. This may result in the child ‘acting out’ in the care setting. Utilise normal behavioural strategies, but always approach with compassion and empathy.

           2. Reduce technology in favour of connection.

           3. Avoid too much structure, instead use ‘gentle’ routines.

           4. Use emotional validation strategies to process feelings.

           5. Remain neutral and impartial.

It is important for teachers and carers to tap into their own empathy and really connect with the child.

Hi, I’m Mikayla I’m 18 years old and I work in the childcare industry as an Outside School Hours Care (OSHC) Coordinator. In my spare time I love camping, fishing, nature walks and spending time with my friends, loved ones and my cat.

The best thing about working with children is watching them grow and adapt in being confident in the environment around them. I love watching children’s faces light up when they master a new skill, as well as seeing their curiosity and interest when learning about something new.

At first, I wasn't sure what I wanted to do for my career. I've ventured into hospitality and retail but in the end these jobs didn't fulfill me. It wasn't until year 11 work experience that I found my passion for caring and educating children.

I am currently studying my Diploma of Early Childhood Education and Care with EPEC Education. To juggle my work and study commitments I have had to work on my time management skills and not take my work home with me. This means I have more of my free time for study and me time. For me the environment I am in reflects on my mood and concentration levels. I make sure I’m in a clean, organised environment with no distractions to optimise my study.

My advice to others that are thinking of studying is, don't see it as something you have to do, it should be something you want to do. Study doesn’t last forever, it should be cherished, as you gain a wealth of knowledge and a life time of career opportunities.

Do you work in the childcare industry?

Yes, as an assistant educator in a long day care centre.

Top Five Benefits of Taking your Study Outside

Everyone has a different approach to study and here at EPEC Education we encourage our students to find the system that works best for them. Being in the study game for so long we know a lot of tricks. For many of you studying at home it can result in procrastination, laying around in your jarmies and watching a lot of reality TV. We also know that being flexible really pays off in the study arena. So how can you be flexible? To start with, you can mix up your study locations to get the juices flowing. Here are 5 great tips to get you powered up.

           1. Incorporate your study into your exercise routine

When you’re sweating it out at the gym, pop your head phones in and tune into a study webinar. When you’re pounding the treadmill in your garage, log in to your online study materials.

           2. Visit your local Library

Studying at the library gives you access to free computers, WiFi, and books, as well as food and coffee to keep the munchies at bay. Even better there are other people studying in the library too and this gives you a feeling of support.

           3. Tap into the WiFi at your local coffee shop

For some students, the chatter of people and clanging of cups instils a sense of calm. Taking your lap top to a coffee shop and tackling a few assessment questions can make good sense. While this isn’t for everyone, don’t be fooled into thinking that you need perfect peace to study – this is actually a myth, and many people actually get more achieved amongst the familiarity of noise and activity.

           4. Relax with your books at the park

There is something special about nature that makes us realise we are just a small part of a larger Universe. This helps us keep things in perspective, and for some, reduces study fear and anxiety. Don’t underestimate the healing powers of getting down in the dirt!

           5. Catch up on study on your commute to work

EPEC Education is a value-add online training organisation, which means its students get lots of additional help in getting across the line. EPEC students say that our student support is first class, and we believe this is why our students have an excellent progress rate. Here are five ways EPEC Education provides its students with the inside rail in getting their qualifications faster.

           Specific help with individual questions

Let’s face it, there will be times when you are stuck on a question and can’t move forward. No problem, reach out to your EPEC trainer and they will help you answer your question. Your trainer is contactable by phone, email or your study group page.

Weekly small group Webinars tailored to specific course units

Every Wednesday night EPEC Education conducts real time Webinars that tackle a range of Units such as: Provide Care for Children; Ensure the Health and Safety of Children; and Embed Sustainable Practice. Each session also provides a forum for you to ask specific questions relevant to your unit. From the comfort of your lounge room, you can complete assessment questions with your trainer in real time.

On enrolment, all EPEC students receive free study skill units that are non-compulsory. This means that if you need the extra study advice it’s there - if you don’t need it that’s fine too! The point is, everything you need is there, and at no extra charge.

           Awesome trainers

EPEC trainers really are a special bunch. They have also studied and worked in the childcare industry, and importantly, done this while juggling work and home life commitments. EPEC trainers WANT YOU TO SUCCEED, and they will do everything they can to get you over the line. Do you need recognition of prior work experience in the industry? No problem, your EPEC trainer may be able to swing some unit credits for you – just to make your journey a little easier!

           Assessment Accountability

This is your education we’re talking about, so it's vital you stay the course! In fact, we’d say it’s so important that it’s worth getting accountability to stop procrastinating. If you’re trying to find some motivation, but you never let someone else know about it, you’re missing out on a major motivator: your trainer. Your trainer is happy to work with you to set some study goals and check in as regularly as you require, just to give you that little push if you need it. Don’t worry, we won’t pester you, but you’d be surprised how being accountable to someone can really fast track your study progress.

Through my eyes - EPEC student Tylah talks Childcare

Do you currently work in the childcare industry?

Yes, I enjoy the work especially when I am in a friendly team environment.

Have you always wanted to work with children?

Working with children was not always my first choice but having my mother, grandma and aunties all working in the childcare industry, it was a career path that I had thought about often. I am happy that I have made the choice to follow this path.

What is the best thing about working with children?

Watching them learn and grow and knowing that you have helped and supported them. When they reach new milestones or are able to do something they couldn’t do before it is very rewarding.

Any tips for juggling work and study commitments?

Time management, don’t try and study when you feel stressed or anxious. Study in smaller blocks of time to allow yourself some “me time". Don’t try to study when you are hungry. Find a nice quiet place that has a calming space for you to think.

What advice would you give to other students thinking of studying?

Research the industry first to make sure it is what you want to do. Have a look at the study requirements to see if it is achievable and can fit into your lifestyle. Make sure you are ready to commit to the term of the course. Have a passion for the industry.

Do you have any study tips to give to other students thinking of studying?

Find a study buddy. Access the available information given to you by the training organisation. If the questions seem over whelming, break it down into smaller parts. Try to answer the questions using the language within the question. Choose a study time when you feel fresh and alert.

Tylah is 18 years old and lives in Leichardt. She has three brothers and a boyfriend, Tyson. Tylah’s spirit animal is the Elephant. “They are fearless and have a large presence. Although they are large in size and I am only small, they walk gracefully and have strong family values”.

Top tips for studying online: What's Beyonce got to do with it?

We all know that studying online is a more convenient way to study, but is it really that easy? This week Mary Anne from EPEC Education talks Beyonce, social networking and how to smash out your assignments.

           1. Be Tech Savvy

Know how to navigate your way around your Online Learning System BEFORE you start your studies. Having IT problems will stop your progress and prevent you from advancing.

           2. Invest in an additional computer screen

This is one of the biggest and unknown tips of all! When you are studying online, you don't have the benefit of having a book that you can flick through and take notes on, and tag certain spots. As a result, you need to be creative in how you read your online learning materials. While I understand purchasing an extra screen is another cost, it really makes a huge difference. It allows you to read your learning materials on one screen, while answering your assessment questions on the other.

           3. Get Toggling

For those of you who cannot afford an additional screen, you have the option of 'toggling' between screens on the one computer. I would suggest this as a good alternative. It is also important to still take written notes. Often it is helpful to READ THE ASSESSMENT QUESTION FIRST, then read the materials and take written notes of the important areas.

           4. Take your chances

Don’t fall into the trap of trying to block out large periods of time for study. With today’s busy lifestyles, you need to take study opportunities when you have them. Even 15 minutes can be enough to smash out a few answers, or jot down some study notes. Don’t be scared of online study. You need to learn to be flexible. Jot down study notes while relaxing in the park, or even read assessment questions between the ads on TV! The point is, little chunks of time will quickly add up.

           5. Find your Beyoncé

Join online webinars and tutes wherever you can. Trainers will reward those who log in to these sessions. They may even give you answers to specific questions. Having a relationship with your trainer will make your study easier.

           6. Start connecting with your peeps

Start chatting with other students who are studying online. This allows you to problem solve, tackle hard assessment questions, and build a social network. Who knows, you might meet someone really special <3

           7. Spread your Net wide

Trainers love to see original thought. Using your own ideas really shows you are grasping the materials. How do you get this info? You discuss your studies with your family, you jump onto Google, and most importantly, you talk to your study peeps!

           8. Loosen up!

Don’t overthink the process. The Internet is a Universe of information. There has never been an easier time in history to study. Information is at everyone’s fingertips. Go get ‘em!

5 benefits of working in the childcare industry

Working in the childcare industry can be a fulfilling and rewarding career. It requires dedication, ethics, commitment, and physical stamina! This week, EPEC Education Director Dr Mary Anne Hall, highlights some of the benefits of choosing a career in this dynamic and ever-changing sector.

           1. Watching children grow and develop

Working with children brings many rewards. It is a chance to see children flourish in their development and become confident, independent learners. For many educators working in the industry is the realisation of a long-awaited dream. These are the people who make the best educators – they have passion, drive and a willingness to succeed in the industry.

           2. Childcare is a growth industry which is set to increase at a rate of at least 20% per year.

Childcare is a growth industry, and in the age of technology whereby many jobs are becoming redundant or obsolete, the childcare sector is set to only grow in size and increase in demand. There will always be an industry need for qualified and capable childcare workers.

           3. Flexible working hours

Given childcare facilities usually open for between 10 and 12 hours per day, there is the opportunity for split shifts, and early or later starts. This may work well for people who want to finish at 3pm or prefer a bright and early 6:30am kickoff! Usually these shifts are rotating, however you should have a chance to have some flexibility. This works particularly well for parents who have heavy home life responsibilities. There are also opportunities for diverse roles in the industry. Working as a Family Day Care educator can be a great way for parents who want to work from home, while still earning a good income.

           4. It enables career progression

The childcare industry now requires that its workforce have (or be working towards) either a Certificate 3 or a Diploma in Early Childhood Education and Care. This is good for two reasons: it ensures better quality of care for children, and secondly, it gives its workforce more knowledge, which ultimately means better pay and better working conditions for everyone.

           5. Fun and enjoyable career

Working in the industry can be pretty awesome. Children really are amazing and watching them grow and play and reach their milestone can bring joy beyond words. Yes, the work is tough, but the pay offs are huge.

5 tips to stop kids fighting in the car

Do you have trouble with children fighting in the car? The car is a great place for children to play out all their sibling dramas and get your full attention– they have you trapped, and they know it! Fighting children in cars is inconvenient at best, and dangerous at worst. This week, Dr Mary Anne Hall from EPEC Education, provides some strategies to reach your destination in one piece!

           1. Plan trips ahead of time

If it’s a long journey, have your route planned. For example, organise toilet stops; snack breaks; park breaks to burn off energy. Long journeys require forward planning. Have a discussion with the children about your expectations - this gives them a sense of ownership and responsibility for the journey. Always ensure you have some small snacks and drinks on hand to keep hunger at bay. Hungry children will be unhappier and are more likely to have temper flare ups.

           2. Have some boredom busters

Spotting patterns of numbers on number plates, Eye Spy; cloud pictures; car colour counting, are all games that will keep children occupied. For longer journeys, consider DVD’s, music etc, to keep boredom at bay.

           3. Pull the car over

If you threaten to pull the car over, it is essential that you follow through on this. If you do not actually pull the car over, children will not believe you. You need to show them what you mean, do not just tell them. Let your actions show them you mean business!

           4. Unpack feelings

If arguments escalate, when it is safe to do so, you need to pull the car over until the children have returned to a calm state: Try the following:

Don’t yell: “This is dangerous, stop fighting, or I will pull the car over”.

Instead: Calmly pull the car over and say: “I can see you are both extremely angry. It is unsafe for me to be driving when you are arguing. When you are quiet and calm, we can continue onto the game (movies etc, whatever your intended destination).

Instead of saying: “If you keep this behaviour up, we are not going to the movies”

Calmly say: “I can see you both are having some problems sorting out who that game belongs to. Let’s discuss how we can problem solve this together”.

           5. Reflect on the journey

When you are home and all in a calm state, you need to discuss the importance of road safety and the ramifications of what can happen if a driver is distracted in a car. It is important that children are given the tools to sort their own problems out, and that as a family, everyone is heard and that their feelings are validated. Maybe use this time to reflect and let the children tell you their views on the journey, and how they think it could be improved.
